I had read Cross eyed Mary was based on a young gal Ian Anderson had seen in the streets begging for money. This is song a commentary on how some people are marginalized and are forced to live by the wits. Its not what you think.

I’m always amazed that a song this accomplished was Paolo’s first single from his debut album. The melodies, the structure and the overall songwriting skill is of someone with 5 or 10 years experience. An extraordinarily good song, superbly sung.

One thing I overlooked, was how the song isn't structured like most regular songs. Chorus only appears once, then a few verses, before the bridge, then a breakdown leads into an extended middle-eight? And, it works so well. I also love the bass playing on this song.

The issues spoken about in this song are unfortunately worldwide. War, poverty, overpopulation, etc. If he is suggesting that these problems are limited to the US, that isn't and was never true. India has problems with homelessness, poverty, pollution, as does the US (still) so it's just not "this countries issues " It's solutions to these problems that matters.

East Harlem in the house...That was a pretty harsh assessment of a song about a man looking back on his life as he approaches the "twilight years". There is nothing " pathetic" about songs that reflect on the past experiences. Many recording artist use that story line. Audiences are often interested in songs written about someone's "life" in general, especially when their personal life makes headlines in the news media. Besides, anyone who enjoyed Frank Sinatra's music (during his life and after) knows that he and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra worked together for many years. Peace ✌️

I was 26 when this came out in 89 and thank god for The Stone Roses who saved British Music from the hellscape of late 80s music, especially from the horror of Stock Aitken and Waterman!! with the best debut album ever it is just a pity the way things turned out but that 1st album is a stone-cold classic and led the way for Oasis and the whole Britpop thing.
